Twas the night before take-off!

Updated: Dec 19, 2024

In about 19 hours we will be sat on an  Airbus A380 on our way to Melbourne, Australia.

(Birmingham to Melbourne – Dawn’s unofficial route planning…)

All the dogs are sorted, the pups have moved house, the care lists are written, the dog food cupboards stocked up and our bags are packed.

I would say I am feeling apprehensive, scared, tearful, excited, daunted, homesick and nervous. I am about embark on the trip of a lifetime. On a trip that will take me half way around the world, one that will see me fly over, or is it through, the equator.

I have never been away from home for so long. I did a 2 week holiday to Malta in my early twenties and swore I would never go away for so long again… and yet, here I am going for twice as long. It all seemed like a good idea and so very easy to say “let’s go for a month”

From reading back what I have just written, it all sounds like I don’t want to go. Oh, I really do want to go, but…

When you leave your animals, you know you will miss them and I don’t want to miss them. Of course, if I could, I would take them but that’s just not practical. Could you imagine a dozen plus terriers on the plane… What fun that would be? George and Irene would be raiding the food trolley and devouring the sandwiches and crisps. Sprout would be up with the Captain, pressing all the “pretty lights” and barking as the seagulls shot past the windows! Maisie would be racing up and down under the seats, stealing shoes from anyone silly enough to kick them off to help them relax. And the Norwich, they would be politely asking to sit on laps and have a cuddle please?

To prevent a spell in the airport jail, I have decided to leave the tribe at home. They will be abley looked after by another tribe of humans who are all well versed in Terrier Tactics!

With everything done, everything packed and everything quiet on the terrier front, there is little left to do other than wait for time to pass. This is the horrid bit of going on holiday. I have spent weeks, if not months, planning for this very moment and now I just want to “get on with it”. I just want to get on the plane.

Someone asked if we would be watching films on the flight, I replied saying I shall sleep. I think I might write a little sign “wake me up for food” and stick it to my forehead. I shall sleep but then if I am asleep, I might miss something.

I am not sure who is more terrier? My terriers, or me…
